On February 25th, Girls of Steel was finally able to hold their 10th Week Zero scrimmage – the first one since 2020 – after three years. Twelve teams attended the scrimmage this year. Like the last Week Zero, this year’s Week Zero took place on our practice field at Carnegie Mellon University at 6555 Penn Ave., near Pittsburgh’s Bakery Square.

The day started off at 9 am for our Girls of Steel volunteers who came early to help set up, check in and welcome teams, and unload robots. Thank you to Diya and Lily who were our champions!

Teams and robots started rolling into the practice field at 10:30 am in order to make any adjustments ahead of the games beginning at 1 pm. The 12 teams in attendance include the first place winner, 4027 Centre Punch, 2656 Quasics, 5740 Trojanators, 8393 The Giant Diencephalic BrainSTEM Robotics Team, 4991 Horsepower, 9004 Obama Academy Eagles Robotics, 3504 Girls of Steel, 4150 FRobotics, 4467 Titanium Titans, 3260 SHARP, 7274 Brashear Bulls Robotics, and 8705 Sci Tech Robotics.

Before the scrimmage games started, we served lunch to all the teams. We had pizza for purchase for everyone and even were able to run a concession stand with a huge variety of snacks with the help of our parent volunteers.

Finally, many thanks to our amazing group of Practice Field build volunteers led by Mr. Greg Young, a 3-time GoS parent and team volunteer since 2010.
