Girls of Steel FIRST LEGO League Projects – RePLAY
Our four virtual FIRST LEGO teams (37 boys and girls in grades 4 to 7) met once a week from September 19 until Demo Day on December 12, 2020. They wanted to share with you highlights of their RePLAY innovation projects. Their challenge was to choose a problem and then propose a solution to increase the activity level of people. Each team selected a different problem. We had a virtual meeting with an expert in the field of physical fitness. We met with Mr. Bob Gillingham founder and owner of CrossFit Glen Burnie in Maryland. Mr. Gillingham’s presentation was recorded and is available to view here. Check out our first blog post here. Also here is a slide show with photos of some of our team members and their RePLAY missions
FLL 2641, CM Blues
Hello from CM Blues. Our team members are: Aishani, Almante, Ella, Fiona, Grace, Jeannine, Rosalie, Scarlett and Sophia S.. We are proud of the website we made for our product, GymSearch. We figured out that a lot of people with disabilities don’t exercise. A lot of them can’t buy the right equipment to help them exercise safely and comfortably. Also, some of them can’t even find shops or gyms with the right things. Studies show that everyone needs exercise, as it improves mental and physical health, helps you grow, and makes you faster and more energetic. When people with disabilities don’t, it can harm their health. That’s when my team had the idea for a helpful website, GymSearch! Gymsearch could help people with disabilities find the right gym, and we could add extra tips on staying healthy. Gymsearch could change the future of staying fit!

Welcome to something the world has never seen before. A revolutionary product changing the lives of some people. An idea, that could one day save lives. Fittsburgh is an app where you can reach out to mentors to help you with your exercise. Doing exercise is important but doing it right is even more important. If you don’t do it correctly then it can lead to injuries. If so, this app is the perfect solution for you. It also tells you where the nearest gyms are and helps schedule sessions with mentors. This app will help the human race astronomically. Lives will be saved, obesity will go down, and obesity-related diseases such as heart disease will significantly go down. We hope to make this app universal as it is currently only available in the Pittsburgh area. Hence, the name Fittsburgh. In the coming years, we guarantee that the world will be changed by a group of kids.

FLL 18137, The Green Gears
Hello! We are the Green Gears, FLL 18137. Our members are: Anisha, Claudia, Divya, Elena, Hayley, Lucia, Maria, Meera and Selin.
The Green Gears focused on the topic of current interest — the COVID-19 pandemic. Our project this year researched the causes of COVID-19 surges and how some were traced back to indoor gyms. Our solution was to create spaces for workout gyms outside. Then, we made a website explaining our thought process and how we came up with the solution to move gyms outside. I think that Girls of Steel really encourages us to think outside the box and to not only look at the drawing board but actually see your progress in real life. It was really nice to be a part of helping to shape our community here in Pittsburgh and it’s exciting to know that we, as pre-teens and teens, can be a part of action and change locally.

FLL 33303, The Pittsburgh Purploids
We are the Pittsburgh Purploids, FLL 33303, and our names are Claire, Dean, Emily L., Evalina, Jason, Joy, Kendall, Pompon and Sophia H..
The Pittsburgh Purploids research project is about the effective way to exercise and stay healthy. Since the challenge this year is RePLAY and we were supposed to find a solution to help people exercise more, so we designed an app called Effective. Effective is an app where you can choose any theme from a TV show, a book, a movie, a video game or even just a random theme like a desert. Every theme you choose would have a different objective, or goal. For example, one theme’s objective could make you jog four laps, and another theme could make you jump rope for a minute. It could track you exercising based on how the device you are using is being moved around. By completing a goal, you could earn currency or collectibles. You can use the currency to buy upgrades and new outfits and accessories for your avatar. You could collect the collectibles or sell them in a shop for currency. We think that this would help people exercise more because it would motivate them. Our research proved how important exercising is. We also made an informative website telling everyone to exercise, the benefit of exercising, and how to use our app. We really hope everyone at home stays healthy and safe!
