On December 6, 2020, the Girls of Steel hosted our first session of “Rosie Talks”, a webinar series that aims to introduce and celebrate the experiences and accomplishments of girls and women involved in STEM from across the Pittsburgh area. This session, our speakers were Anna Nesbitt, Girls of Steel member and a senior at the Winchester Thurston School, and Elizabeth Bianchini, a robotics PhD student at the University of Pennsylvania; we had approximately 40 registrants. Anna has founded three award-winning elementary school robotics teams in an effort to create a STEM pipeline that girls can follow at her school starting in second grade.
Elizabeth, or “Bibit”, focuses on legged and modular robotic systems. Her love for robotics started in high school as a Girls of Steel member from 2011 to 2014. Fun Fact: In 2013 Bibit was one of the co-founders of the Girls of Steel FIRST LEGO League program.
The webinar was held through Zoom, and each speaker gave a presentation summarizing their work and accomplishments before completing a Q&A session where participants were given the opportunity to directly ask questions to the speakers. Future “Rosie Talks” sessions are on the following dates: January 10, February 7, March 7, and April 11.
Meet our Session 2 speakers on January 10th.
